NAC ACHIEVES AIRPORT CARBON ACCREDITATION

13 Apr 2026

The Namibia Airports Company (NAC) has achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability journey, with Hosea Kutako International Airport and Walvis Bay International Airport attaining Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Level 1. The NAC received the ACA Level 1 certificates from Airports Council International (ACI) Africa in March 2026.

Airport Carbon Accreditation is a globally recognised programme that independently assesses and recognises airports for their efforts to manage and reduce carbon emissions. Achieving Level 1 indicates that the airports have successfully measured and compiled their carbon footprint, thereby establishing a foundation for long-term carbon management strategies. Furthermore, it signifies that the NAC has taken a critical first step towards implementing targeted carbon reduction initiatives and enhancing operational efficiency.

This milestone underscores the NAC’s commitment to aligning its operations with international environmental standards and best practices. It also reflects the organisation’s broader vision of becoming a world-class airport operator that balances growth with sustainability, while positioning Namibia on the global map of environmentally responsible aviation.

In pursuit of this vision, the NAC continues to integrate environmental considerations into airport management, infrastructure development and stakeholder engagement. The NAC is now well-positioned to progress through higher levels of accreditation, which include carbon reduction, optimisation, and ultimately achieving and maintaining Net Zero Emissions by 2050.

Globally, there are 648 accredited airports, with 47 of these located across 19 African countries. The inclusion of Hosea Kutako International Airport and Walvis Bay International Airport contributes to the growing number of accredited airports on the continent, thereby reinforcing Africa’s role in advancing sustainable aviation practices.
